Terrain Occlusion Using Binary Adaptive Ray Casting

چکیده

Mission planners can benefit from determining regions of space occluded by terrain from sensor positions, e.g. in order to determine ingress and egress paths. Conventional approaches to computing occlusion using 2D or 2.5D representations of terrain are inefficient and do not scale well. Binary Adaptive Ray Casting uses intersection calculations accelerated by 3D hierarchical bounding volumes to perform adaptive interval probing. Candidate regions of dead ground are tested against a required tolerance for “shallowness” caused by grazing rays. The approach can be scaled arbitrarily on a cache-coherent non-uniform memory architecture to compute occluded terrain in near real-time.

Gpu-aware Hybrid Terrain Rendering

We present a hybrid GPU rendering pipeline for high-resolution textured terrain fields that reduces polygon throughput limitations on the GPU. This pipeline uses rasterization and ray-casting in every frame simultaneously to determine eye ray intersections. It allows shifting workloads flexibly between the triangle setup stage and the parallel execution units, depending on the GPU capacities. W...

GPU Ray-Casting for Scalable Terrain Rendering

With the ever increasing resolution of scanned elevation models, geometry throughput on the GPU is becoming a severe performance limitation in 3D terrain rendering. In this paper, we investigate GPU ray-casting as an alternative to overcome this limitation, and we demonstrate its advanced scalability compared to rasterization-based techniques. By integrating ray-casting into a tile-based GPU vi...

Volume Terrain Modeling and Rendering for Flight Simulation

We present a non-traditional approach for ight simulationand training, mission planning and rehearsal. It involves photo-realistic volume-based modeling and rendering of real world terrains from a single elevation map and a satellite or aerial photograph of the terrain. This has been achieved using voxelization, 3D texture splatting and ray-casting. We demonstrate the ability of our approach to...

Memory-Efficient On-The-Fly Voxelization of Particle Data

In this paper we present a novel GPU-friendly real-time voxelization technique for rendering homogeneous media that is defined by particles, e.g. fluids obtained from particle-based simulations such as Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). Our method computes view-adaptive binary voxelizations with on-the-fly compression of a tiled perspective voxel grid, achieving higher resolutions than prev...

Antialiasing in Raycasting Digital Terrain Models

We may use ray-casting methods to render terrain from digital terrain models. In this paper we enhance a terrain renderer in several ways, including application of antialiasing techniques. Also we examine various aspects of antialiasing in terrain rendering. We summarize surface and color reconstruction models, and discuss several vertical antialiasing techniques, including supersampling and ar...
